Matthias Auf der Maur was born on july 10th 1977 in Lucerne, Switzerland.

In 2003 he got his diploma in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. After his diploma he worked for 9 month with the Laboratory for Electromagnetic Fields and Microwave Electronics of the ETH as resaerch assistant, designing a monolithically integrated InP 4-12 GHz low noise amplifier (LNA) for use at cryogenic temperatures.

From October 2004 to March 2008 he did a PhD at the OLAB, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", working on the development of a new multiscale simulator for electronic and optoelectronic devices (PhD thesis: "A Multiscale Simulation Environment for Electronic and Optoelectronic Devices"). Since 2019 he is associate Professor with the Department of Electronic Engineering.

His research interests are

  • semi-classical transport in semiconductors

  • Multiscale/multiphysics simulation of devices, in particular integration of continuum and atomistic models

  • simulation of III-nitride devices

  • optical modelling of micro- and nano LEDs

  • Mathematical/numerical properties of the drift-diffusion equations and their discretisation

  • the Finite Element Method (FEM) applied to transport equations

  • Object oriented software implementation of simulation models in a complex multiphysics environment
