Cookies are files or pieces of information that may be stored on your computer (or other internet enabled devices, such as a smartphone or tablet) when you visit a website.

A cookie will usually contain the name of the website from which the cookie has come from, the "lifetime" of the cookie (i.e. how long it will remain on your device), and a value, which is usually a randomly generated unique number.

2. Are all cookies the same?

There are two type of cookies:

  • Proprietary cookies: Cookies sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a machine or domain managed by the publisher, from which the service requested by user is provided
  • Third party Cookies: Cookies sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a machine or domain that is not managed by the publisher, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.

These can be:

a. Technical cookies
Technical cookies are necessary to provide the requested service. For instance, technical cookies allow you to proceed through different pages of a website with a single login and they remember selections in forms that are filled out on the website.

These can be navigation cookies or session cookie.

b. Analysis cookies
These cookies allow their publisher to track and analyze the behavior of the linked websites' users. The information collected through such cookies is used to measure web site, application or platform activity, and to draw-up user site, application and platform browsing profiles, in order to implement improvements based on usage data analyses.

c. Performance cookies
These cookies may be limited to one session or permanent, but their use is limited to the performance and improvement of the website. These cookies gather information on how a visitor uses the site, e.g. the pages visited. Performance cookies do not gather information which might identify the user. All the information gathered by these cookies is aggregated anonymously and used only to improve the website functions.
